What Are Runes?

According to the Greek folklore, the runes were given to humanity as a gift from the Norse God, Odin, who hung himself from the tree of life in an act of self-sacrifice. After multiple nights of going through an insufferable ordeal, Odin died and started his journey through the afterlife where he gained eternal wisdom and was reborn. He passed this superior wisdom to his people in the form of runes.

The word runes stand for "Secret" or "Mystery". Runes are an ancient Germanic alphabet, used for writing and are said to be associated with magic. They also appeared on some amulets, dating from the Roman age, where it is believed that they were carved to act out as charms. They are mostly used as a means of predicting one's future.

Runes can be made of various materials but are most commonly found carved in stones and feature a symbol from the runic alphabet on them. There are numerous types of runic alphabets used on runes, with one of the oldest ones being the old Germanic runic alphabet known as ‘Elder Futhark’. The Elder Futhark contains 24 runes, the first six of which spell out the word ‘futhark’.

Uses of Runes

The runes can be helpful in solving problems and issues. It can show you what can happen but not what will. They work differently than fortune telling and do not provide you with straight answers. It will only hint at the plausible answer and you will need to figure out the rest. This is where intuition comes to play.

According to rune readers, the future is not fixed, which means you still hold the power to walk your path and make your own decisions. If you’re not satisfied by the advice provided by the rune, then you have the power to take a different path.

What sort of Runes do you need?

Runes are made of different materials including pebbles and stones so if you are just starting out, you can buy any decent set of runes but if you decide to follow the art more thoroughly and immerse yourself in the craft, then you have the option of investing in a number of sets. Maybe you are fond of a particular crystal such as amethyst then you can buy a set made out of those crystals.
